As potent anesthetic, the medication is usually recommended to be swallowed whole and is believed to work by decreasing the sensitivity of stretch receptors in the lung, reducing the drive to cough after taking a deep breath.It can also be useful as a topical anesthetic for mouth or pharyngeal pain in small doses.
