Bulk cerium oxide has two stable stoichiometries: the cubic fluorite-type dioxide (CeO2) Fm3m and the hexagonal Dicerium trioxide (CAS NO.1345-13-7) (Ce2O3) P-3m. In Ce2O3 one electron per cation occupies the Ce 4f subvalent orbital, which is empty in CeO2. Structurally, transition between CeO2 and Ce2O3 can be described as the loss of two out of eight O atoms by the unit cell accompanied by its hexagonal distortion along the volume diagonal. Close thermodynamic stability of these stochiometries leads to continuous range of partially reduced phases CeO2-x, where oxygen vacancy can be rapidly formed or eliminated.
