Preparation of 3-(Benzylthio)propionic acid: It can be prepared by dithiocarbonic acid S,S'-dibenzyl ester and acrylic acid. This reaction will need reagent 30percent aq. KOH at the temperature of 25 - 90 °C. The reaction time is 20 min. And the yield is about 98%.

Uses of 3-(Benzylthio)propionic acid: It can be used to produce 3-phenylmethanesulfinyl-propionic acid. This reaction will need reagent aqueous NaOH and aqueous H2O2.
