Nabilone is a modified cannabinol derivative with central nervous system activity. It can be used as an antiemetic and as an adjunct analgesic for neuropathic pain. And it is also used as an adjunct therapy for chronic pain management. It is a synthetic cannabinoid, which mimics the main ingredient of cannabis (THC).
In 1985, Nabilone was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the use in treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting which has not responded to conventional antiemetics. But the drug only began to sale in the United States in 2006. It is also approved for using in treatment of anorexia and weight loss in patients with AIDS. Now, In the markets of Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, nabilone is sold as Cesamet.
